A Word to the Wise about Cooking with Essential Oils

We LOVE to cook with Essential Oils!!! Has there been a learning curve? Yes, yes there has been. But once you get the hang of the "how," it's both easy and fun, and of course...tasty! The general rule of thumb for cooking with Essential Oils is that for stronger spices you dip a toothpick in the oil and swirl the toothpick in your recipe. Remember, 2 drops of oil can be equal to 2 ounces of dried herbs! Is the toothpick swirl necessary? Well, friend, let me illustrate that with a story.

I was craving peanut sauce and so, with the help of the internet, found a recipe that looked promising. Only it called for cilantro, which I did not have. Not to fear, I pulled out my trusty bottle of dōTERRA Cilantro Essential Oil and dropped ONE drop of oil into my recipe. And it was ruined. And I was not going to waste food, so I thought to myself, "I'll just add more ingredients until it tastes right." Ten batches of peanut sauce later I had an incredible sauce that was table-ready and exactly what I wanted. Except that I had ten batches of it. For any of you who might find yourselves in a similar circumstance, know that you can easily freeze peanut sauce in ice cube trays. When frozen, pop them out and put them in a container in your freezer, and when you have a craving for Thai food, pull a couple cubes of peanut sauce out of the freezer.

Back to the swirl. Yes, it is necessary. You'll need this the most with oils such as basil, cilantro, cinnamon, rosemary, thyme, etc. When I use citrus oils (wild orange and lemon, for example) I have a heavy hand, and the results are always delicious. Also remember that you should NEVER ingest oils that are not Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Oils. We only use dōTERRA CPTG Essential Oils in our house and I would not recommend using anything else, just from a perspective of safety.

Now that you know how great cooking with Essential Oils can be, pick a recipe and give it a try. Each week I'll add a new recipe for you to try, so if something on the current list doesn't strike your fancy, check back with us next week.

Bon Apetit!
